SA Woman Breaks Guinness Record for Eating Most Chicken Feet | The African Exponent.
Vuyolwethu Simanile, a Durban, South Africa woman, has broken a Guinness World Record for eating the most chicken feet. The woman booked her place in the record books after she ate the most chicken feet in a minute in a competition held yesterday.
According to reports, the chicken feet eating competition took place in Umlazi, Durban, in South Africa. The competition was between five women who were faced with the task of eating as many chicken feet as they could eat in under one minute.
Interestingly, all five women who registered and participated in the competition are friends and colleagues working at a local shisa nyama called Mashamplanes. However, Vuyolwethu Simanile would defeat her other four friends and book a spot in the Guinness book of records after consuming 121 grams of chicken feet in one minute.
In a video that was shared on eTV’s Stumbo Record Breakers, an emotional Vuyolwethu could be seen covered in tears after she was announced the winner and current holder of the Guinness world record for the woman who consumed the highest number of chicken feet.
But while the Guinness Worl Records are filled with weird and remarkable achievements, official adjudicator Sofia Greenacre thinks this one will stick – for now.
Speaking on the show, she said: “It’s going to be really exciting to see where this goes if it gets beaten.”
She added: “Speed eaters across the world are very competitive and will jump on any new records that appear. But I think this one is going to be tough to beat.”
Chicken Feet Delicacy in South Africa
Chicken feet are a special delicacy among South Africans. It is often referred to as ‘runaways’ or ‘walkies’ in the country and is enjoyed by many. There are nine provinces in South Africa that are well known for their admiration and consumption of chicken feet.
In Cape Town, in the Xhosa language, they’re also called “amanqina enkukhu.” Before cooking, the feet are submerged in boiling water to remove the outer layer of the skin.
Then they’re cooked. Most recipes involve stewing, grilling, frying, or “braaing” (barbecuing). Walkies are high in protein and low in kilojoules. They consist mainly of skin and tendons, so their crunchy texture and flavour is different from the rest of the chicken.
Chicken feet are also a delicacy in many Asian countries like China, the Philippines, and Vietnam. There are many recipes for chicken feet, but the most common method is having them braised and marinated in black bean sauce topped with red chili slices and chopped spring onions.
About Guinness World Records
Guinness World Records (GWR) is a reference book published annually in different languages worldwide. It lists world records of human achievements and the extremes of the natural world. The book was co-founded by twin brothers Norris and Ross McWhirter in Fleet Street, London, in August 1955.
The Editor of Guinness World Records is Craig Glenday, and the Jim Pattison Group publishes it. It was first published in English on 27 August 1955 and has been published yearly since then.
Guinness World Records documents and celebrates superlative achievements that are the best in the world. Record breaking is a serious business, which means we have strict policies governing what constitutes a Guinness World Records title to maintain these high standards.
There are more than 40,000 current records in our database. However, due to space constraints, they only publish around 4,000 records in the book each year which always makes it a tough decision for the editorial team and editor-in-chief!
